Professor Struggles with PTSD, ADD, Clinical Depression, Poor Sleep

I tend to shy away from testimonials, not that I don't find them meaningful. It's just that they are not scientific and being in academia for over 30 years, I consider reports complete with empirical data published in peer reviewed journals to be the most valid. However, when something works well, I am more than happy to pass it along to my friends; Ok, I found one - it's called MindWorks. First allow me to confess
that I am the Queen of ADD and have been all my life.

Where are my books? Shoes? Glasses? Sit still. After a while one learns to live with it and exchanges the label "ADD" with "multitasking" to save face. The fact that my students call me "Professor" still is a mystery to some - including me at times. When Shaklee announced the new MindWorks I was thinking, "Ok perhaps it will help my failing memory, make me young again, and allow me to wear my 3 inch heels." Putting humor aside, I can tell you memory loss was really starting to bother me. I was pushing 60 and expecting some loss of cognition, but I also knew I was dealing with issues far beyond that - and it frightened me. You see, from age 46 to 56 I had lived in an extremely stressful state. I had the usual stress that came from getting a divorce, losing home, income, dealing with a hormonal teen, caring for aging sick parents, dying friends, etc. All came to a screeching halt however when my only child, my son, was almost killed in a car accident 4 years ago. He was on life support for a week, 27 broken bones and having the nurse tell us they didn't know what his 'new normal' would look like. My world stopped and I could not breathe.
After 3 weeks of hospital vigilance we saw he would live and I found myself back in the classroom standing in front of my students who were waiting for the lecture de jour. Only one problem - I didn't know where I was or what I was supposed to be doing. I found myself frozen as a deer caught in the headlights first day back. I knew I was in class, but that was about it. Lucky for me, my lectures were posted online so I pulled it up and hoped I was on point. It was scary. My therapist told me afterwards it was classic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and that it would take time for my memory to come back. Great.

As the years went on, I saw my memory slowly resurfacing but still I was at half the recall of what I was before the accident. Then MindWorks came along from Shaklee.

Long story short: The first day of taking MindWorks I felt a gentle mental awakening with more clarity but i wasn't really paying too much attention to results. Then one day, the same week, in class I found myself on the other side of the room - totally engaged in the subject realizing I had just taught 30 minutes without looking at my notes! Next day - same thing! Whoot whoot!!! Later the next week I found myself working well into the afternoon and actually making sense which had become a rarity past 4PM. Energy - clarity - focus! The results were enough to make me a believer!!

But what I noticed next came a treasure surprise. You see, along with all the stress of those hard years came a certain level of clinical depression. My doctors told me that one cannot sustain those levels of stress without having the pool of 'feel good' brain chemicals bottom out. To remedy it I was given the usual round of Rx's but they didn't help: Prozac turned me into a zombie and Wellbutrin made me a raging lunatic - according to my son. Nope, I settled on St. John's Wort much to the chagrin of my MD as she said it would never get my brain chemistry back to the high levels needed to feel joyful again. It helps,  a little, but I had resigned myself to the fact that I may never have those light peace-filled feelings again. Well this past week i have noticed a joyful bliss creeping back into my mornings. One morning after a calm read the joy fairy just kind of settled in and a tear of gratitude rolled down my face. Yes, there was a way out of the brain dead pit - and it seems to be called MindWorks. At least it was for me. So there you go my friends: my testimonial. I am sleeping better too. My retention of facts and focus keeps getting better. I am tickled pink to get my brain back!!

Infertility

Six months after our wedding Scott and I decided to start our family. What was expected to be a simple goal became our most difficult life challenge. The next seven years were filled with tests, procedures, surgeries and disappointment. Finally we were blessed with a pregnancy using in vitro fertilization. Miranda changed our lives dramatically.
We BOTH began supplementing with Shaklee's Vita-Lea, B-Complex, Vita-C, Vita-E, Zinc and Energizing Protein. We also made a few dietary changes: no dairy, organic when possible and hormone-free meat. When Miranda was 21 months old I learned I was pregnant again. Oh Happy Day!
This pregnancy only required feeding our bodies the necessary nutrition to do what bodies are in-tended to do-conceive and grow a healthy baby. I had a terrific pregnancy, no nausea or complications. Kellen, now 3 1/2, is the healthiest, happiest boy I know. Both children use Shaklee nutrition and have never needed medication or antibiotics. The average child goes to the doctor 15 times a year! Shaklee keeps my children healthy and "drug free." I believe the years of heartache and medical procedures could have been avoided with the simple, easy addition of Shaklee to our diets and our lives.

Shirley Fike, RN, has recommended the following for a young couple who desires to conceive: At each meal, each should take 1 Tbsp. Protein, and 1-2 tabs of each of the following: Vita-Lea; Vita E, Vita C, Zinc. She says it has never failed in 23 years!

5-Hour Energy Drinks Cited in 13 Deaths

The federal government and the New York Attorney General's office
are investigating after the Food and Drug Administration received
claims that the drink 5-Hour Energy may have led to 13 deaths
and 33 hospitalizations over the past four years.

The popular energy shot – which comes in 2 oz. packages
and packs a powerful caffeine punch, equal to two cups of coffee --
led the way in this new and growing energy drink segment over the
past eight years. Now government officials are investigating whether
the product, made by Michigan-based Living Essentials, does much more.

"If someone is to use multiple cans, now is when we start to see
some of the side effects," Dr. Sean Patrick Nord, USC Director of the
Section of Toxicology, told ABC News. "You're getting astronomical amounts,
30 to 40 cups of coffee."

The recent FDA filings mark the second time in a month the administration
has confirmed it is investigating claims that energy drinks are causing fatal
reactions. In October, Monster energy, another popular drink that contains
even more caffeine, was allegedly linked to five deaths.

The manufacturers point out that these are just claims, and there is
no proven link between the drinks and the deaths.

In a statement overnight, 5-hour Energy said the product
is "intended for busy adults."

The company says its compact product contains "about as
much caffeine as a cup of the leading premium coffee."

During an interview this September, Manoj Bhargava, the founder
and CEO of 5-Hour Energy, told ABC News "Nightline" that
when used as directed, the caffeine in his product doesn't do any harm.

"It's overblown. When it's in small quantities … It's like this --
water is good, but if you have too much you drown," he said.

Most experts say the fatal dose of caffeine for an adult would be
almost impossible to drink – actually 50 to 60 times of what is
contained in an energy drink.

But critics worry about children with underlying heart problems
drinking them, and are warning that energy drinks may be more hazardous
than coffee because of the temperature.

Natural Healing For Tendonitis/Tennis Elbow

I probably hurt my elbow years ago, but once I started working out with a personal trainer last year, I was in unbelievable pain. He wanted me to keep working it!  But it needed RICE (Rest Ice Compression and Elevate) I put a compress around it, and took fish oil one day which caused me to burp fish, and then finally I just got a steroid shot so I could go deep sea fishing. My wife told me she had seen a survey completed by an Orthopedic Surgeon -385 of patients who took a steroid shot and about 88% said they would NEVER take a steroid shot again. They claimed the shot only delayed the healing, damaged the area more in some cases and the pain was often worse when it came back. After the steroid shot, I later heard that thousands of people got meningitis from tainted steroid shots taken in July and August.... the same time frame when I and a family member took the shot!  About 200 died and thousands were got very sick.  So my wife worried about this for a while! The doctor assured us he didn’t have the tainted steroids in his office.
The pain did not re-occur till now and it was unbearable. I put my arm in a sling as the pain was now shooting up to my shoulder joint.
I was unable to move my 2 middle fingers and the pain was so intense,
I couldn't even think or move - I just sat in my chair and just tried to breathe.
I agreed to start the fish oil and antioxidant remedy my wife found on the internet. {It's true if it's on the internet according to the blonde on tv!} Norway Olympic Rowing Team can get Tennis Elbow/Tendonitis anywhere in their body where there are tendons and joints. Also Dr Chaney, a Phd who oversees an Active Cancer Research Program for 38+ years at Chappell Hill North Carolina and teaches nutrition to medical students... had tennis elbow from playing tennis. Both used fish oil and antioxidants.
Olympians can't even use steroid creams otherwise they would be eliminated from the competition. Dr Chaney claimed the pain went away in 3-4 days and never came back. So I agreed to try this home remedy: 8 fish oil capsules a day plus antioxidants, protein and Alfalfa all from Shaklee. My wife keeps us stocked with Shaklee's brand of supplements which pharmacists and scientists claim these products are 50-300% more effective than anything available today.  This is due to the products being all natural, all organic and the special way the food and raw material are processed. Shaklee is so effective, the products are used by US Astronauts since 1993,US Olympians for 30+ years and all Time Life World Class Explorers since 1956. Well, it worked. No side effects, no deaths, no damage. I only had a burp or two during this treatment. I will keep taking for the rest of the month till it heals completely.
Each day it got better and by the 2nd day I wasn't even using the sling for my arm and the 3rd day, complete relief - I could raise my arm above my head! So, go all natural and organic! You are worth it! This Doubting Thomas proved it works.

Doctor Endorses MindWorks instead of Medication

In 2006, budding artist, Matthew Kurz was blinded by the sun while driving to school and rear ended
a school bus. This accident would forever change his life. Matthew, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Following the accident, he was unable to walk, talk or create art. In spite of a lengthy time spent in a coma and an ongoing recovery time, his mother, a Shaklee Distributor, has continued to provide him with abundant supplements and Shaklee proteins. At present, Matthew writes in cursive, walks some, talks softly and jokes with others, rides a horse named Frito for therapy and attends an art class at State Fair Community College. In his mother's own words, she says: "Matthew is doing beyond great... 2 weeks ago he walked 2 steps with no cane or help. Two months ago his Dr. said to only use Shaklee MindWorks (instead of the medications he was taking.) With MindWorks, his short term memory showed a greater improvement than the medical prescription he was using. Amazing!

Soy and Hot Flashes

Soy and Hot Flashes

Will Soy Put Out the Fire?

Author: Dr. Stephen Chaney

FireThere has been a lot of controversy in recent years about whether soy isoflavones reduce the hot flashes associated with menopause.

And this is an important question! Because of concerns about increase heart attack risk with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) many women have been looking for natural alternatives to HRT for reducing hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. They've been asking whether soy isoflavones are effective, and the answers that they've been getting have been confusing.

Soy and Hot Flashes

For example, you can still find many experts and health professionals who will tell you that soy isoflavones have no proven effect on menopause symptoms.

That is somewhat surprising since two recent meta-analyses (Howes et al, Maturitas, 55: 203-211, 2006; Williamson-Hughes, Menopause, 55: 203-211, 2006) and a 2010 expert panel of The North American Menopause Society have all concluded that soy isoflavones alleviate hot flashes.

Will Soy Put Out The Fire?

Soy BeanHowever, clear guidance in this area was sorely needed, so Taku et al (Menopause, DOI: 10.1097/gme.0b013e3182410159, 2012) performed an even larger meta-analysis that included 19 published clinical trials - some of which had been published after the previous two meta-analyses were performed.

I've talked about meta-analyses before, so you probably already know that they are very powerful because they combine the results of many individual clinical trials into a single data analysis.

But you also may remember me telling you that meta-analyses can be misleading if they introduce bias because of the kinds of clinical studies that they exclude from their analysis.

So I examined the design of this meta-analysis very carefully. It excluded clinical trials that:
  • were not double blind, placebo controlled and designed in such a manner that the placebo was indistinguishable from the soy isoflavone preparation.
  • contained other substances in addition to the soy isoflavones (The presence of other substances in the preparation might have influenced the response).
There were several other well justified reasons for excluding some studies from the meta-analysis, but they were technical in nature. In my opinion this was a very well designed study.

And the results were clear cut. An average of 54 mg of soy isoflavones (some studies used a little less, some a little more) was to sufficient to reduce:
  • the frequency of hot flashes by 21% - and –
  • the severity of hot flashes by 26%

What Does This Study Mean For You?

The results of this study were highly statistically significant. So if you are suffering from hot flashes and are wondering whether soy isoflavones will put out the fire, the answer appears to be YES.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that 21-26% is not a huge effect.

And, if you look at the individual clinical studies it is apparent that the response is highly variable. Some women experience major relief from hot flashes and other menopause symptoms, while other women experience little or no relief.

The reason for this variability is not known, but it is likely that the effectiveness of soy isoflavones on reducing hot flashes is modified by other components of the diet and by lifestyle factors such as obesity, exercise and stress.

My take on this is that soy isoflavones should not be thought of as a "magic bullet" that will make hot flashes go away by themselves, but rather as a proven part of a holistic approach that encompasses a healthy diet, exercise, weight control and stress reduction

The Bottom Line

1)    A recent meta-analysis of 19 published clinical studies showed that soy isoflavones reduced the frequency of hot flashes by 21% and the severity of hot flashes by 26%.

2)    The results were highly statistically significant, but 21-26% reduction in symptoms is not a huge effect.

3)    When they looked at the individual clinical studies it was apparent that the response is highly variable. Some women experienced major relief from hot flashes and other menopause symptoms, while other women experienced little or no relief.

4)    My take on this is that soy isoflavones should not be thought of as a "magic bullet" that will make hot flashes go away by themselves, but rather as a proven part of a holistic approach that encompasses a healthy diet, exercise, weight control and stress reduction

"I wanted great memories with my family, not just more stuff!"

My story started when I decided to be a stay at home mom. I had a very nice career in technology but couldn't stand spending just 2 hours a day with my 2.5 year old and seeing my health and husband's health go bad. Ed has been able to control his type 2 diabetes but I desired more. I wanted great memories with my family, not just more stuff. I quit and after 2 years of being at home and seeing the market crash, I was faced with some tough decisions. Go back to work or use my entrepreneurial background and find another way. Enter Shaklee...
At first I was so drawn in by the cleaning products. Being a stay at home mom meant that I am my family's EPA. I was always looking for non toxic cleaners that actually worked. All I did was switch brands and tell my friends about them. If i could earn them for free and have the potential to build a thriving business that would help pay for my kids activities, even better I'm glad to say that I haven't paid for laundry detergent in five years and I have been able to pay for things like piano lessons and preschool. Now I am paying for my husband's new car and vacations!
I am also my family's chef and nutritionist so Shaklee also has helped me support my family in building better health. We have better immune systems during the cold and flu season as well as allergy season. Shaklee has provided us with quick meals on the go as well as healthy alternatives to the conventional sports nutrition products. The best things about my mompreneur journey is that I have not only been able to be a wife, mom, Cheng family CFO, EPA, and Nutritionist but also
help other moms do the same. Helping others leave a healthy legacy is so rewarding!

Digestion Problems Anyone?

Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid Options

Millions of Americans take these anti-acid blocking drugs hoping they will save them from the discomfort of heartburn and acid reflux. For years the purple pill (Prilosec) was the best selling prescription drug in the world! But how many people would take this if they knew that it was... hollowing out their bones?

In a randomized double-blind study, the GOLD standard" of medical research, this hugely hyped drug was found to cause a 41% to 61% drop in calcium absorption.

What this means for the end user of these types of products is that you can faithfully take your calcium supplements and end up with crippling osteoporosis. The results of this study are sited in JAMA or the American Journal of Medicine. This really should come as no surprise said Dr. James Balch, "You need acid in your stomach to digest your calcium. This means that even taking TUMS for calcium is a bad idea."

Earlier in this year, the FDA warned that these drugs can deplete magnesium levels. The FDA stated that: "PPI drugs result in low serum magnesium levels and can result in serious adverse events including: muscle spasm (tetany); irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias); and convulsions (seizures)

Dr. Allen Spreen, M.D. wrote an eye-opening article in the Boston Globe Magazine warning people of Prilosec health risks. He said, "That drug stripped misery from the lives of millions and became the world's best-selling prescription drug and the number one medication prescribed for seniors - taking in $6 Billion a year. Prilosec is so good, and patients so attached to it, that doctors jokingly call it 'purple crack'."

Dr.Spreen went on to say that the solution to Acid Reflux and Heartburn is "ridiculously simple (and cheap) using readily available supplements that work in 2/3's of the cases."

These two supplements are a good Probiotic ( we are not talking about Activia Yogurt here okay which is not effective in delivering enough friendly bacteria to lower gut) and Digestive Enzymes.

Shaklee Corporation makes one of the best probiotics called OptiFlora and one of the best Digestive Enzymes call EZ-Gest:

Optiflora Probiotic Complex utilizes patented triple layer encapsulation technology, is designed to provide live delivery of probiotics to the large intestine, where they provide the greatest benefit.

EZ-Gest offers as-needed relief from incomplete digestion of foods. Alleviates discomfort such as gas and bloating. The ingredients in EZ-Gest support digestion of fat, protein, and carbohydrates including lactose.

Back Pain - 95% Pain Free

I have had back pain on and off for the last several years. Last year, the pain continued to worsen and gradually began to affect my daily routine, such as standing for any length of time, weight lifting, etc.

An MRI revealed that I had two discs that showed signs of degeneration. The doctor prescribed physical therapy to strengthen the back, a prescription for pain blockers and an electronic pain-blocking device as well (TENS unit) neither of which I used.

During this time, I did quite a bit of research and found that glucosamine supplementation was known to help some patients with certain types of back pain. I discussed the possibility with my doctor, and to my surprise, he advised me to try it.

I began to take Shaklee Joint Health Complex - 1500 mg (3 capsules per day as recommended on the label) all in one does for greatest effectiveness. By the end of the first month, I had already noticed a difference. I continued to improve with each passing month; after 6 months, I was able to lift light weights, walk on the treadmill and do many things I had been unable to do before. I have now reduced the dosage of the Joint Health Complex to a maintenance dose of 2 per day taken at lunch and dinner.

I can truthfully say that I am at least 95% pain free. I am very happy with the results I have seen with this product and intend to continue with it from now on.

Gene

Kalyn Alwin - Crohn's Disease

For those of you who don't what Crohn’s disease is, it is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines.  Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever & diarrhea.  A person with Crohn’s is always checking to see where the nearest bathroom is.  When having a flare up a person can go to the bathroom up to 60 times a day.  Sometimes the swelling & healing process produces a thickening of the walls of the intestine & thereby narrowing the intestine so an obstruction can easily happen. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, another intestinal disease, usually only affects the first layer or two of intestine. Crohn’s can put holes thru your intestines, resulting in leaky gut syndrome.  Crohn’s can be managed but not cured.  If you cut out the diseased portion of the intestine it can move to another part of the intestine.
When I was 24 years old, about to get married, I had my first panic attack.  The stress was overwhelming & soon I was having bowel trouble.  I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease, put on medication & did fine for years. I was later diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as it got worse.
When I was 30 years old, I was pregnant with my daughter and it actually got better.  Your brain produces a chemical to help your body cope with the disease at that time.
I also joined Shaklee, took the vitamins & protein, but not consistently.
Slowly, probably due to poor diet, stress & not getting enough sleep, or vitamins, the Crohn’s got worse.  I was referred to many different gastroenterologists.  I have been to Mayo Clinic in Rochester also.  For me, RUSH University downtown Chicago has turned out to be the best.
To say the pain is horrible is an understatement.  It was nearly impossible to work.  I had a lot of sick days & there was no relief no matter what I did.  It felt like a knife was being twisted in my belly.  My poor daughter basically didn't have a mom as I was laying on the couch in agony quite a bit. I popped vicodin and any other drug I could get my hands on. It took everything I had just to make dinner.  I remember having to go to Walmart, looking around at everyone else who walked around so easily. I was so jealous because I was hanging onto the cart in so much pain.  I have been on many medications, probably why I have lost some of my memory.  The last medicine I was on was Remicade, which is a very powerful intravenous anti-inflammatory made out of mouse protein. YUCK!  You have to lay there several hours at the hospital every 6 weeks, and it costs $6-8K every time.  It worked but only for awhile.  My doctor kept telling me I needed surgery & I refused for 2 years. I had surgery in May of 2008 because I couldn’t stand the pain any longer.
I had lost 40 lbs. I went from 160-118 lbs. I was put in the hospital with a pic line, which is a feeding tube in your arm up towards your heart, to fatten me up for the surgery.  I had 2 abscesses that had drain tubes and a bag to collect the infection from the abscesses in my intestines.
I had great results from the surgery, but my doctor still had me on Remicade because he said it was only a matter of time before the Crohn’s symptoms return.  When my insurance ran out I could not afford the treatment any longer.
I started taking Shaklee religiously.  I do take $200-300 worth of vitamins every month.  I have not had any flare ups or any pain since I have been taking Shaklee faithfully.  I eat whatever I want. I believe God & Shaklee are keeping my disease in remission.  Now I am slightly overweight and Cinch is helping me lose that weight.
How can I not tell others about this wonderful company, that has great products that work, that possibly can prevent other people from future medical problems like cancer, heart disease, diabetes & stroke.
Shaklee has changed my life. I’m on a great team with Lorraine Ulrich, Louise Rees, Cathy Hauck, Sue Olsen, my mom (Mary Cauwels) & Lori DeDina. I now tell others about Shaklee all the time.  It used to bother me when I got a “no”, but now I don’t care.  It’s just closer to a “yes”.
I thought I couldn’t do Shaklee as a business because I’m shy and I don’t like to talk to people. Little by little, by being in the company of successful Shaklee people, listening to cds, getting on webinars, I’m changing.  Gary Burke said “Don’t wish Shaklee was easier, wish you were better.”  Shaklee is helping me become a better person.  I’m also impressed watching all of you become better people. God Bless Shaklee.
These are the Shaklee products I take for Crohn’s:

1 Vitalizer Strip, 2 Garlic, 6 Omegaguard (Dr. Carsten Schmidt advised me to take 6), 1 180 Shake, 1 tsp. Vivix, 12 Alfalfa, 1 VitaD3, 1 iron+C (Crohn’s patients usually have low iron)

Breast Cancer & Vivix

I share my story to help all who have been afflicted with breast cancer.  While there are no guarantees, what if Vivix could do for you what it did for me?

l am a breast cancer survivor now 11 years out.  For the last four years I have had a tumor marker done during my yearly oncologist visit.  The range is between 0-35 (of course no one has 0).  In 2004, it was around 18. Each year it has slowly ticked up and in 2007 it was up to 20.7.  This was a red flag for me although my oncologist dismissed it.  I started using Vivix in August of 2008.  In October 2008, I had my yearly checkup and tumor marker done.  When I got the results I was amazed.  My tumor marker was down to 9.3.  Wow!!!  The only thing I am doing differently is taking Vivix.   Thank you God!!!  Thank you Vivix!!! Thank you Shaklee!!!

Since my encounter with breast cancer, I have made it my mission to help others to live a healthier life.  I was not looking for Shaklee.  Shaklee found me and I am so very thankful every day of my life.  Shaklee has helped me turn something so negative into a positive by giving me the opportunity to share my story and to help people just like me with products that really do work.

Blessings to all,
Nancy R
