Your Aging Brain

As we age, we can see our physical appearance changing—all we have to do is look in the mirror. However, it is not so apparent that our brains are also undergoing considerable changes. Scientific studies have shown that the size and structure of our brains are changing throughout life.1

First the bad news

If you could peek inside your brain, you would see how it is affected by the aging process. Here is what typically happens as our brains age:
  • Volume decreases: Somewhere around your 20th birthday is your peak brain mass. After that your brain volume steadily declines until around age 50 when this process accelerates. It is thought that the loss of neural connections, rather than brain cells, accounts for this loss of volume.2
  • Plasticity declines: Plasticity is defined as the brain’s ability to change its structure by forming new connections, deleting unused connections, and strengthening useful connections. Our plasticity typically declines as we age.
  • Blood flow diminishes: Blood flow to the brain can decrease with age as a result of changes in arteries and cholesterol build-up (atherosclerosis). Decreased blood flow can rob the brain of much needed oxygen and nutrients.
  • Plaque formation: Beta-amyloid plaque occurs in most people’s brains as they age. This plaque is what is thought to be responsible for the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Sleep quality deteriorates: Most people experience a decrease in sleep quality as they age. This lack of good sleep negatively affects mental functioning, including memory and cognitive skills.

Now the good news

Even though our brains are changing as we age, most older people feel that they are much smarter than when they were young (even if they lose their keys every day). Part of the reason for this is that we are always learning and that learning accumulates as we age. Yes, you are smarter than your 20-year-old son or granddaughter!
There are many positive changes that occur in the brain:
  • Brain plasticity: While the trend in brain volume is downward, research demonstrates that neuroplasticity takes place well into old age. A German researcher named Janina Boyke taught elderly volunteers to juggle and noticed that their brain size increased.3 Your brain has the ability to continually grow and change as long as you continue to grow and change.4
  • Problem solving: Older adults are typically better at managing money, relationships, and other problems that come up in life. The ability to problem-solve gets better as you age because you have more experience and become less emotionally tied to problems.
  • Optimistic: People tend to get more optimistic as they age. When asked to record their emotional states randomly chosen each day for a week, older adults scored higher than younger adults on a test of optimism.5
  • Priorities: As they age, people tend to prioritize other people more than they do jobs, money, or fame. Older adults tend to spend more time with a smaller, tighter circle of close friends and this is important because social engagement is critically important for maintaining healthy cognition.
  • Knowledge increases: While you may be losing some of your cognitive skills as you age, your overall knowledge is always increasing. This means you have more tools to understand your lives and express yourself.
  • Emotion: Older adults have better control over their emotions than they did when they were younger.
Your brain is going to go through a lot of changes as it ages. Many of those changes can be offset by focusing on your overall health and taking care of your brain with nutrition, exercise, and continuous learning.

Is Omega-3 Uptake Gender Specific?

This is a very interesting article on how much omega you should be using on a daily basis

Is Omega-3 Uptake Gender Specific?

Do We Need To Reexamine Everything We Thought We Knew About Omega-3s?

Dr Stephen Chaney

Man & WomanSome of you may remember the book from a few years ago titled “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. The book proposed that men and women communicate differently (Who would have guessed?), and understanding that fact would help husbands and wives communicate with each other more effectively. I know that some people complained that it was an overly simplistic viewpoint, but I know it sure helped me communicate more effectively with my wife.

I came across a very interesting article recently that suggested the omega-3 fatty acid EPA might be metabolized and utilized differently by men and women. You might say that the statement “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” applies to omega-3 utilization as well.

The Science Behind the Study

Now that I've captured your interest, perhaps I should fill in a few details. We have known for years that the long chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA appear to be beneficial at reducing the risk of heart disease. There are several mechanisms for that protective effect:

1)     Omega-3s reduce the stickiness of platelets so that platelet aggregation, a fancy name for blood clotting, occurs less readily. Of course, we want our blood to clot when we cut ourselves, but we don't want it to clot inside our arteries, because that is the very process that can lead to heart attacks and stroke.

2)     Omega-3s lower triglycerides and reduce inflammation, two important risk factors for heart disease.

3)     Omega-3s help keep the walls of our blood vessels elastic, which enhances blood flow and reduces the risk of hypertension.

However, for any of those things to occur, the omega-3 fatty acids must first be incorporated into our cell membranes. Thus, it is not just how much omega-3s we get in our diet that is important. We need to know how many of those omega-3s are actually incorporated into our membranes.

What if the efficiency of omega-3 uptake into cellular membranes were different for men and women? That would change everything. It would affect the design of omega-3 clinical studies. It would affect omega-3 dietary recommendations for men and women. The implications of gender-specific uptake of omega-3s would be far reaching.

Is Omega-3 Uptake Gender Specific?

Fish & Fish OilThe authors of this week’s study (Pipingas et al., Nutrients, 6, 1956-1970, 2014) hypothesized that efficiency of omega-3 uptake might differ in men and women. They enrolled 160 participants in the study (47% male and 53& female) with an average age of 59 years. The study excluded anybody with pre-existing diabetes or heart disease and anybody who was significantly overweight. The study also excluded anyone taking drugs that might mask the effects of the omega-3 fatty acids and anybody who had previously consumed fish oil supplements or more than two servings of seafood per week.

This was a complex study. In this review I will focus only on the portion of the study relevant to the gender specificity of omega-3 uptake. For that portion of the study, both male and female participants were divided into three groups. The first group received 3 gm of fish oil (240 mg EPA and 240 mg DHA); the second group received 6 gm of fish oil (480 mg EPA and 480 mg of DHA); and the third group received sunflower seed oil as a placebo. The study lasted 16 weeks, and the incorporation of omega-3 fatty acids into red blood cell membranes was measured at the beginning of the study and at the end of 16 weeks.

When they looked at men and women combined, they found:
  • A dose specific increase in EPA incorporation into red cell membranes compared to placebo. That simply means the amount of EPA that ended up in the red blood cell membrane was greater when the participants consumed 6 gm of fish oil than when they consumed 3 gm of fish oil.
  • Very little incorporation of DHA into red blood cell membranes was seen at either dose. This was not unexpected. Previous studies have shown that EPA is preferentially incorporated into red cell membranes. Other tissues, such a neural tissue, preferentially incorporate DHA into their membranes.

When they looked at men and women separately, they found:
  • The efficiency of EPA incorporation into red cell membranes compared to placebo was greater for women than for men. In women increased EPA uptake into red cell membranes was seen with both 3 gm and 6 gm of fish oil. Whereas, with men increased EPA incorporation into red cell membranes was only seen at with 6 gm of fish oil.

What Is The Significance Of These Observations?

The authors concluded “This is an important area for future research because dietary recommendations around long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake may need to be gender specific.”

However, there are a number of weaknesses of this study:

1)     It was a very small study. Obviously, this study needs to be repeated with a much larger cohort of men and women.

2)     This study was just looking at incorporation of omega-3s into red cell membranes. We don’t yet know whether the specificity of omega-3 uptake will be the same for other tissues. Nor do we know whether there will be gender specificity in the biological effects of omega-3s.

3)     Most importantly, not all previous studies have reported the same gender specificity in omega-3 uptake seen in this study.

So what does this mean for you? Should men be getting more omega-3 fatty acids in their diet than women, as the authors suggested? That is an intriguing idea, but based on the weaknesses I described above, I think it's premature to make this kind of recommendation until these results have been confirmed by larger studies.

The Bottom Line

1)     A recent study has suggested that women may be more efficient at incorporating the omega-3 fatty acids EPA into their cellular membranes than men. The authors of the study concluded that “…dietary recommendations around long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake may need to be gender specific.”
2)     However, the study has a number of weaknesses:
  • It was a very small study. Obviously, it needs to be repeated with a much larger cohort of men and women.
  • This study was just looking at incorporation of omega-3s into red cell membranes. We don’t yet know whether the specificity of omega-3 uptake will be the same for other tissues. Nor do we know whether there will be gender specificity in the biological effects of omega-3s.
  • Most importantly, not all previous studies have reported the same gender specificity in omega-3 uptake seen in this study.
3)     The idea that men and women may differ in their needs for omega-3 fatty acids is intriguing, but based on the weaknesses described above, it is premature to make this kind of recommendation until the results of the current study have been confirmed by larger studies.

Corey Cogdell and taking small steps

Posted: 19 Sep 2014 12:34 PM PDT
Corey Cogdell, American trap shooter and Shaklee Pure Performance Team member, celebrated a recent victory, having claimed the 2014 USA Shooting National Championship in international trap with a personal record (241 out of 250 clay targets).
“Small changes and consistent hard work will eventually pay off,” said the 2008 Beijing Games bronze medalist, who believes in reaching goals and achieving big wins when competing “I have very high goals but I always approach the journey just one small step at a time.”
What Corey described is what we like to call The Shaklee Effect™—the concept that small steps today can lead to big results tomorrow. Whether you are shooting for a medal in a competition, improving your health, or building a successful business, you can achieve much with that first step toward your goal.
“One of the first things I realized I needed to manage was my stress level,” Corey said. “I consider myself very tough under pressure, but that’s mostly because I’ve built that strength, not because I was born with that ability. My training plan includes pressure-induced situations, and I try to learn from every high-level competition.”
And, of course, Corey considers Shaklee Stress Relief Complex* helpful in her stress-management routine.
“Too many people think they need a big change to get their big results,” she said. “But the best success stories in sports and in life are built on incremental steps. For instance, I realized I needed to adjust the balance of my shotgun, so I asked Krieghoff (the manufacturer) to shave some weight off the barrels.” And how much weight was removed from her nearly eight-pound gun? “Just three grams,” she said.
That small change—less than the weight of the nickel in your pocket—was just right as evidenced by her National Championship victory.
With the 2016 Games in Rio just two years away, Corey is aiming for more positive results in the future, and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes.
What small step have you taken that’s led to a big result in your life? Comment below.

How to End Procrastination

It's GrOw Time

How to End Procrastination
by Jim Rohn
Perseverance is about as important to achievement as gasoline is to driving a car. Sure, there will be times when you feel like you're spinning your wheels, but you'll always get out of the rut with genuine perseverance. Without it, you won't even be able to start your engine.

The opposite of perseverance is procrastination. Perseverance means you never quit. Procrastination usually means you never get started, though the inability to finish something is also a form of procrastination.
I'm going to tell you how to overcome procrastination. I'm going to show you how to turn procrastination into perseverance, and if you do what I suggest, the process will be virtually painless. It involves using two very powerful principles that foster productivity and perseverance instead of passivity and procrastination.

1. Break it down.
No matter what you're trying to accomplish, whether it's writing a book, climbing a mountain or painting a house, the key to achievement is your ability to break down the task into manageable pieces and knock them off one at one time. Focus on accomplishing what's right in front of you at this moment. Ignore what's off in the distance someplace. Substitute real-time positive thinking for negative future visualization. That's the first all-important technique for bringing an end to procrastination.

2. Write it down.
We know how important writing is to goal setting. The writing you'll do for beating procrastination is very similar. Instead of focusing on the future, however, you're now going to be writing about the present just as you experience it every day. Instead of describing the things you want to do or the places you want to go, you're going to describe what you actually do with your time, and you're going to keep a written record of the places you actually go.

In other words, you're going to keep a diary of your activities. And you're going to be amazed by the distractions, detours and downright wastes of time you engage in during the course of a day. All of these get in the way of achieving your goals. For many people, it's almost like they planned it that way, and maybe at some unconscious level they did. The great thing about keeping a time diary is that it brings all this out in the open. It forces you to see what you're actually doing... and what you're not doing.

Break it down. Write it down. These two techniques are very straightforward. But don't let that fool you: These are powerful and effective productivity techniques. This is how you put an end to procrastination. This is how you get yourself started.

Biodegradable cleaners are finally in fashion .....
BUT ... Many of the cleaners that we buy in the supermarket - and some of the biodegradable cleaners that we buy in the health food store - release toxic fumes in our homes that can  adversely affect the our health and our children’s
health.  The prevalence of childhood asthma increased 74% between 1980 and 1994 and has continued to increase in the years since. Evidence has accumulated in recent years that some of the increase may be caused by early exposure to toxic chemical fumes in the home. Why is that?
The American consumer keeps demanding cleaners that work better (It's considered a big plus if they require no effort) and are easy to use (Don't bother with messy liquids and pastesjust spray it on).  And manufacturers have been willing to
oblige by adding ever more exotic chemicals to household cleaners and putting them in aerosol spray cans. And of course no one opens their windows any more. That would be wasting energy and contributing to global warming. The result is that these toxic chemicals accumulate in the air that we breathe in our own homes. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has stated that the air inside our homes is often more polluted than in Los Angeles or New York on a smoggy day.
A number of studies have pointed to an association between these toxic household fumes and  childhood asthma, but I'd like to focus on one  particularly good study on this topic that was published recently in the European Respiratory Journal (31: 54-57, 2008).  The results from this study was clear.  Higher household chemical exposure during pregnancy was associated with a 41% increase in childhood asthma in children with no known allergies.
What does that mean to us? It means that it is not enough to select household products that are safe for the environment. We also need to select products that we use in our homes on the basis of their safety for us and our family - not just on the basis of cost and convenience.

THANKFUL MOM WRITES 9 year old with Leg/Joint Pain

Ethan was 9 years old and he was suffering with leg/joint pain...to the point where he could hardly walk in the morning and had to have help getting dressed. He had roller coaster grades in school .. he'd go from A's to D's. He was very lethargic in the morning and then he would be so wound up after school that he could not sit and do his homework without mom sitting right next to him. His teacher had him sitting in the front of the classroom at school because he wouldn't pay attention, He had dark circles under his eyes, course stiff hair, etc.

Since starting Shaklee, his pain is gone. He is making A's and B's. It's easier to get him up in the morning. He can get dressed by himself. Just after two weeks on Shaklee his teacher said he was acting better and was different...so he now sits in the back of the room. He does his
homework by himself and often times he's doing it at school during study hall. No more dark circles and no more antibiotic's every few months for strep throat.
His Supplements at the time were: 2 each Vita--‐Lea with iron; B--‐Complex;Energizing Soy Protein drink daily; and  morning and before bed; Osteomatrix...3 per day.

SON’S “TIC” PROBLEMS FINALLY SOLVED!

When my oldest son Andrew turned three years of age, I decided to use a cleaning service. Shortly after they began cleaning, he began to develop a neurological eye-blinking tic that progressively got worse and he became very self conscious.

My husband and I spent hours, researching on the Internet, considering many different reasons why this was occurring in our healthy and happy three-year-old. We thought perhaps he needed his eyes tested, or maybe he had allergies to something,
maybe it was nutrition, or maybe the stress of having a new sibling in the home impacted him so much this was a coping mechanism. I made appointments with allergists, optometrists, pediatricians, finding out he had great eye-sight, no huge red flags on allergies, and no explanation as to why these tics were occurring.

Well, as time continued, so did his tics and it was a daily struggle, but as Summer ended, his tics miraculously dissipated. Ironically, I had also quit using my cleaning service in order to save money.

As time progressed, Andrew was Tic-Free. As the holidays approached, I decided I missed that “clean” smell from my cleaning service, and asked them if I could purchase the cleaning products. Within a month’s time, Andrew’s tics returned. I had that mommy “gut” feeling that maybe, just maybe, it was the products I was cleaning with, but I wasn’t completely sure.
So, a couple months back, I made the final discovery. I noticed in my garage I had some left-over deodorizer and thought it would help freshen my car. Within TWO days, Andrew’s Tics were full force!

I quickly cleaned out my car with a steam cleaner (water only). Thankfully, after the last episode, Andrew’s tics went away within a week’s time. Finally, after a couple years, the mystery was solved!  I soon learned that indeed chemicals in just ordinary household cleaners are extremely toxic and I quickly started to think to myself, what else am I putting around my family that is causing damage that isn't obvious. I have completely switched to using Shaklee’s non-toxic and green products.        Scotty & Marti Scott

Lingering Headache Gone !

My daughter, Amber, talked about how she had a guest who complained about a headache. She gave the guest Shaklee’s electrolyte balancing product called Performance, and the headache quickly disappeared. Unfortunately, when I had a headache that lingered for 2 days I did not      remember her comment. But upon hearing about my headache, Amber again, suggested the    Performance, and guess what? After taking the Performance, the headache was gone before I knew it! In looking back, I had gotten busy and had not fixed my usual “Energy Tea Mix” drink for a few days, and apparently my diet had been off and it had not provided me with the good       electrolytes that I needed … thus my lingering headache. Tip of the Week - by Robert A. Rohm, Ph.D.

stick to it and prosper

I am certain that you have experienced times in your life when you wanted to quit. Don’t feel alone! It is an experience that is simply part of life and is common to all of us.

Perhaps it was when you were faced with an extremely difficult class in school where the information was way over your head.  Possibly you have been in a business situation where you felt overwhelmed or maybe you have been in a relationship that you felt was a big mistake as each day got harder and harder.

All of us can identify with some aspect of life that completely overwhelmed us.  If you feel as though you are the only one who has ever wanted “throw in the towel,” do not be dismayed. Everyone, at one time or another, has felt your pain!

A friend of mine once told me that even Jesus wanted to quit!  I didn't think that sounded quite right. He then reminded me of the time when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane praying. He asked his Father if there was any possible way out of the cross situation he was about to face. And there was no other way out! That helped me to realize that if Jesus wanted to give up and quit, I should not despair when I face trying times and difficult situations myself.

I have discovered that the secret to pressing through difficult times is by simply being devoted to the cause in which I am involved.  Someone who is devoted to what they are doing will prosper.  It may take longer, and it may take more diligent focus.  It may take more determination and hard work.  But, if a person will focus on the solution rather than on the problem at hand, and simply stay devoted to the cause, they will be much better off.  If they develop “staying power,” they will sooner or later accomplish their goals and dreams.

Perhaps you have heard the word “sticktoitiveness.”  That word sums up what I am talking about.  It is the ability to stick with something until you can get over the “hump” and are able to see your way clear to experience more success in your efforts.  If you stick to something long enough, in time, it will get better.  Your devotion to your goal and mission will cause you to prosper.  If you focus on the solution and the end result of your dream, it will help you when you face the daily trials that are sure to come your way.  It is only one person out of a large crowd who will have the vision and ability to look past their current set of circumstances to see the rich reward that is waiting for them if they will simply keep plodding along and remain devoted to the task at hand.

Every success story I have ever read, and every rags to riches story that has blessed my heart, focuses on the same issue; namely, working through difficult times.  Almost every person who has experienced huge rewards and great success can look back to the time when they wanted to give up and quit but did not do so because they were devoted to what they were doing.   Because they “stayed with the stuff,” they eventually saw the light at the end of the tunnel…and it was not a train coming towards them!  It was the fulfillment of their dream and the goal that they longed to reach.

Most of us have watched exciting ballgames.  No one is thrilled when one team is winning by a huge margin. People get up and leave those games early! But, the game people will be talking about for years to come is the one in which both teams are struggling hard down to the last few seconds and one team wins by just a few points after a hard fought battle.

As they often say, “The tougher the battle, the sweeter the victory.”  Your sweet victory may be just a few more weeks away.  Do not give up.  Remain focused on the task and remember to be devoted to all that you are doing.  In the end you will win.  Victory is assured and the rewards of your accomplishments will be enjoyed for the rest of your life!

Tip: Whatever you devote yourself to will prosper!

Have a great week!  God bless you!
